Opening ArcGIS Online content in ArcGIS Explorer?

I created content in ArcGIS Explorer Online and saved it to my user space at ArcGIS Online. Now I want to open that map in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. I click on the "Add Content" button on the ribbon and choose "ArcGIS Online". That opens a new browser tab at this location: http://www.arcgis.com/home/arcgisonline.html

It's kind of a dead-end. How do I choose which content I want to add? I'm sure there must be something obvius here that I'm missing?

Allen,

Typically content created in ArcGIS Explorer Online is saved as a map - assuming this is the case - you should be able to select the content you created then click details. On the details page beneath the thumbnail image is a link that says Open (e.g. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=5a98f6527a3c4cfb835ae0b4ce5fb696). Click the arrow next to this link to expand a list of applications in which to open the content - you'll need to choose ArcGIS Desktop 10.0. If ArcGIS Explorer is open it will receive the content from ArcGIS.com, otherwise I believe ArcMap will open to handle the content.

Thanks for your reply. I tried those steps but was not able to get the map to open in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. Before trying the steps I opened ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 10. I should note that I have not yet installed ArcGIS Desktop 10 - I'm still using 9.3.1.

I clicked on the arrow next to "Open" and chose ArcGIS Desktop 10. A "Open File" dialog box popped up, asking if I wanted to open or Save "item.pkinfo." I chose Open. After a few moments I received an error message for an invalid package. So still no go.

Why do I have to try to trick the software by opening Explorer Desktop but then choosing to open in ArcGIS Desktop? Shouldn't Explorer Desktop be a standard choice?

Allen,

Unfortunately I should have said - at the moment it depends on the type of content. If the thing you're trying to open is an ArcGIS.com web map (automatically opens in the ArcGIS.com map viewer) then that will not be supported in ArcGIS Explorer until the 1500 release (due mid-late August).

I'll follow up internally on whether ArcGIS Explorer local/desktop should appear in that Open options list as a standard choice - that may well be the plan once 1500 is released.

Further to my previous post - rest assured ArcGIS Explorer 1500 (the next release due out soon) features much greater/tighter integration with ArcGIS.com plus other enhanced sharing capabilities.

Apologies for the delay in replaying to this - unfortunately I didn't get an alert.

The types of ArcGIS.com content which can be opened in ArcGIS Explorer 1200 are:

- ArcGIS Explorer maps (.nmf) e.g. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=7eceb949d93a4f5cbea1cb2ecb2ccee9

- ArcGIS Explorer content files (.nmc) e.g. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=8a0b4a7ea9db45daa4785c721c5fb861

- ArcGIS Layer Packages (.lpk) e.g. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=eae8dd68007e4462af9d3836fbeb4600

- ArcGIS Server services e.g. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=f2498e3d0ff642bfb4b155828351ef0e

You can also add content directly from ESRI's ArcGIS Online map servers by adding the URL http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/services as a new connection under GIS Services in the Add Content menu.

Lastly - you can change what happens when you open some of this content (i.e. open in existing Explorer instance or fire up a new one) by double clicking ArcGISFileHandler.exe in C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcGIS\bin.

The imminent ArcGIS Explorer 1500 greatly improves the integration of ArcGIS Explorer, ArcGIS Explorer Online and ArcGIS.com.

Has there been any progress with respect to Explorer Desktop being able to open maps created and hosted on arcgis online? I have a map that can be opened by explorer online but not by explorer desktop.

The comments in 2010 seem to suggest this would be addressed in the next release of explorer desktop however I am still experiencing the same issue.

BUMP...

I have been reading that it is supposed to do just that, however I can't seem to get it to work. My Content does not seem to show up. I can see LOTS AND LOTS of shared content, through the Search Window, but when I type in my data content by exact name I get search returned 0 items. I'm signed in and it says it is 'searching {my organization]' If there is something that I am missing please let me know.

Curiously as I was continuing to beat on the dilemma and now I can see my published maps I have on ArcGIS online. However not any of the data, so even when I open a map that I have on ArcGIS online, it opens without any of the data layers. Maybe it is busy adding the links to the data layers to the ArcGIS Explorer Desktop Search 'engine' hmmmm Hopefully we can get this to work. Explorer is a great desktop tool!

I seems we have both hit the same road block. My challenge is that the ESRI personnel that monitor this forum are not commenting on our issue. I have seen numerous comments that indicate that what we are looking to do should be possible in the latest issue (and even previous issues) of the product, but no clear instructions on how to achieve the end we desire.

Given that the desktop product supports gps units you would think it only natural that it would support access to arcgis online content. Since their other mobile products collector and arcgis mobile for smartphones can do it it is clear that the technical capability exists. In 2010 Mike from ESRI wrote in this forum "The imminent ArcGIS Explorer 1500 greatly improves the integration of ArcGIS Explorer, ArcGIS Explorer Online and ArcGIS.com." We are in 2013 now right? Yet it still seems the ESRI format content that you place on the ESRI online servers (for which I pay an substantial organisation subscription) cannot be used in an ESRI product.

I hope I am wrong. I hope someone will show that this is so easy to do that I am ashamed of even placing this post (I an handle the embarrassment in the face of a simple working solution).

Maybe someone for ESRI will weigh in and provide some clarity on the issue.
