census blocks 2000

I'm trying to import census 2000 blocks into CA. The zipped files are from the census website and meet the 3mb limit, but exceed the 100 records limit. The import manager lets me continue, but then gives the error that the shapefiles are invalid. Has anyone figured out how to get census block shapefiles into CA?

Could be a projection issue as that error message is common in those situation.  What projection are the census blocks in?
