ArcGIS Velocity is now available for ArcGIS Enterprise

ArcGIS Velocity has been Esri’s real-time and big data processing and analysis capability of ArcGIS Online that enabling users to ingest, visualize, and analyze spatial real-time and big data to gain new insights and take action. With the release of ArcGIS Enterprise 12.1, ArcGIS Velocity is now available for self-hosted ArcGIS Enterprise deployments on Windows and Linux, providing organizations with a modernized interface and codebase for real-time feed ingestion and analytics within their own infrastructure.

One question is whether things like "Idle Detection" that work well in geoEvent will be supported in the release of Velocity for Enterprise.

Great question! For the initial 12.1 release, the product team focused heavily on achieving functional equivalency with GeoEvent Server. The main focus was around out-of-the-box capabilities first, and then some custom add-on capabilities (such as the example you linked) second. This work will largely continue with subsequent releases; with the goal of closing the gap as much as possible over time and releases.

In some cases, equivalency has been achieved by making certain feeds, outputs, and tools in a 1:1 direct manner. Think the TCP (client) feed, or the Watch a Folder for Local Files feed. These have parity with GeoEvent Server specific input connectors using TCP or local files, and have been introduced to Velocity for ArcGIS Enterprise 12.1+.

Current users of Velocity for ArcGIS Online may have seen the roll out of capabilities that were taken directly from GeoEvent Server in preparation of the Velocity for ArcGIS Enterprise release. For example, Route by Expressions was introduced to Velocity for ArcGIS Online to achieve parity with GeoEvent Server's Choice element. This tool, and all the other Velocity (Online) tools, feeds, and outputs, are available in Velocity for ArcGIS Enterprise at 12.1. The product team will continually work towards maintaining parity between Velocity for ArcGIS Online and Velocity for ArcGIS Enterprise in the same way that ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS have parity.

In some other scenarios, functional equivalency has been accomplished by ensuring certain capabilities could be achieved through other means than a direct 1:1 copy of a tool, input, our output. I think the Detect Idle processor is a good example of this. It exists as a custom add-on processor for GeoEvent Server, but similar functionality is possible through configuring the Calculate Motion Statistics tool in Velocity.

Another example can be found with regex support. Velocity for ArcGIS Enterprise lacks it while GeoEvent Server supports it. This is mainly because Arcade functions in Velocity can be used to achieve much of what regex was good for in GeoEvent Server. The product team recognizes however that regex offers some capabilities that Arcade doesn't, and so work is ongoing to bring a new regex tool to both distributions of Velocity in the future.

We hope this gives you and others an idea of how Velocity for ArcGIS Enterprise will be supported moving forward. In the short term we are working on closing the functional gaps between it and GeoEvent Server. In the long run, we will maintain parity between Velocity for ArcGIS Enterprise and Velocity for ArcGIS Online.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, and I have to say that I agree with the majority of what you have to say. Route By has simplified the conversation of many RTAs for us, although, like Choice, it seems to have issues with default conditions.

I do have to note, however, that after a couple of years of working with various Esri representatives, the geoEvent result set and Velocity result set specifically for Detect Idle logic are just very different. Additionally, from looking at various community threads here, I think you will find that I am not the only one with this issue. Other add-ons also fall into the "almost" category.
