Calling ESRI REST API from javascript

Is there any way to call ESRI REST API from javascript and get the result?.

If possible any documentation/url on this?

Which version of the ArcGIS API for JavaScript are you using? 3.x or 4.x?

The links provided by Robert Scheitlin, GISP above are obviously for the legacy 3.x version.
