Model Builder Error 000271 - Cannot use existing layers

Question

I have some simple point layers that I'm trying to incorporate into a model. Why would my layers suddenly not work? The layers are fine. It doesn't matter where they are; if I drag them over from the catalog pane, they won't work either. I'm always struggling to get any tool to work from day to day.

They are in a file geodatabase.

I just shut it off and on and started a new model. It was just an esri thing.

add map layers from map contents pane

add featureclasses from catalog pane

And are the point layers featureclasses in a local file geodatabase or some other incarnation of a point layer or are they added to the map from some other location.source?
