I think it would be really helpful if the Image Gallery could be updated to be a "Gallery" and allow both images and videos to be included in it.
Thanks for posting this idea @AmyJewitt. Could you please share a little more about what you'd like to do with a video gallery? We haven't added this year because we have some concerns about the performance a video gallery. Loading up to 12 videos at the same time might create challenging situations.
Could you answer a few questions and maybe provide some examples of use cases you're thinking about so we can better understand your needs?
Hi @OwenGeo,
Happy to answer your questions. See my notes below:
An example use case would be in the following StoryMap I recently made titled "2024 Invasive Species Scavenger Hunt":
https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0c555d18aee6490b99cfa31c133520f9#:~:text=in%20this%20StoryMap.-,BAMBOO,-Bamboo
The link I'm providing takes you to a specific section in the StoryMap that describes an invasive species (bamboo) that has an Image Gallery right below the heading "BAMBOO". I would love if this Image Gallery could instead be a Gallery that would allow me to include not only photos, but relevant videos as well (such as those that I include further down in the Bamboo section - "Videos & News Media").
Another possibility for the "Would you want them all to be playing at the same time, or would having a single image playing at once meet your needs?" question could be that the videos are stagnant, but hovering over them plays a preview gif, then clicking actually loads the full video w/ sound. Like @AmyJewitt said, more options are better, and the perhaps the users could toggle a checkbox within the gallery's settings for whether or not the videos are even playing at all — until they are clicked on.
Thanks for your suggestion, @ChrisWozniak! I agree with your idea.
🙂
