Utility network analyst: why setting flow direction requires editing mode?

The “set flow direction” is kept deemed unless the editing tool is started. Why the set flow direction needs editing mode?

Because you might be changing the direction of flow.  Similar to editing the physical geometry which requires an edit session (for example flipping a line's direction flow direction documentation)
