ArcGIS Pro altering a column from excel when imported

When I add a table from Excel, with a GEOid to match census tract GeoID numbers, ArcGIS Pro is changing the whole set of numbers into a single matching number: 2147483647.

This is a simple exercise to make a join- for my students- but they cannot make the join if the ID is not there!

You didn't set the field properties 'explicitly' when saving the worksheet, so anything goes...

PS  I used the Excel to table tool
