Seeking some advice on ArcGIS Collector Alternatives

I've used Collector before (paired with Trimble R1) to take points in the field.

I was hoping to come up with a similar but more cost effective solution perhaps using something like a BadElf Surveyor, however I'm coming up short on the software side of things. Ideally connecting to android devices.

Are there any cheaper services, or better yet, comparable opensource / outright purchase (no subscription) options that you can think of?
