I have 7 web apps and 7 different web maps (one for each app). All of a sudden, yesterday, one of the web maps started to not honour the symbology that was set in the web map. It was only with the polygon layers. The web app has started filling in 3 of the polygons feature services when all of the settings, including in the visualization settings of each feature service, has the polygons shown only with a black outline - no fill. I have deleted the map, recreated an entirely new map. Deleted the app and recreated an entirely new app. I have changed the basemap. I have removed the feature layers from the map then added them again... I still get the same error from the web application - where 3 polygon layers are shown filled in and not as just outlines.EDIT: Now it is doing this for all polygons within my map and for all maps, but only in the web app builder, not in the map itself. I hope someone has some advice out there!!?
@EmmettHurley - 3.1 by default checks off the "use symbol types compatible with all clients" - which now needs to be turned on (whereas before it didn't, even when you were using non-vector symbols) because the new version - 3.1 - will turn non-vector symbols into vector symbols when publishing.
Looks like you are using symbols that are not supported in 3.x web apps like Map Viewer Classic and Web AppBuilder apps. If you are using vector symbols from Map Viewer, under the Visualization tab on the layer or sharing web maps from Pro with layers set to publish more advanced symbols will create symbols that are not supported on older clients. If you use Map Viewer, Experience Builder, Instant Apps, Dashboards and Story Maps you will see these symbols come across.

Or share another way than on the public site?I can guarantee that these web apps were running fine 2 weeks ago and the symbology has not changed at all within that time in the map. Only within the web app did it change - on it's own. When I brought the web apps into a different organization, they did the same thing/same error.

@Marie-AngeFournier-Beck reported that support mentioned an issue with Pro 3.1 always writing out the vector symbols which are not supported in Map Viewer Classic and other 3.x clients like Web AppBuilder. I do not have the bug # for tracking right now though.

What if you're publishing a web layer not a web map - there's no "use symbol types..." check box for the share web layer option? It degrades the symbology for the layers when opened in Map Viewer Classic.

Hello @RussRoberts - I am having a similar issue where I do not see the "Use symbol types compatible with all clients" checkbox when overwriting a web layer. I checked quickly to see if that would be the case for sharing a new layer, but I also did not see the checkbox.
What version of Pro are you using? Are you using this in Map Viewer Classic or other 3.x apps?
I was having the same issuing publishing from Web Viewer Classic so switched to Map Viewer (despite hating it), but as of today, my Web Apps are not honoring symbology I created in Map Viewer (not Classic). Let me know if anyone else is having this issue going forward.
Would like to hear what issues you have with Map Viewer? No recent changes have gone out this week. Can you share the map and give additional details on what the expected vs. actual results are?

@Esri: why is the "Use symbol types compatible with all clients" checkbox toggled OFF by default? It took me a while to find it, and now I have to remember to check it every time I publish a map (and have this conversation with everyone else in the office whenever their published map symbols fail). Is there a way to set the default to ON?
For anyone else trying to find it:
When you publish a map with a feature service, you have to click the "Configuration" tab, then click the pencil to edit the configuration settings on the Feature Layer. Then again click the "Configuration" tab, and toggle the checkbox ON for "Use symbol types compatible with all clients". Screenshots below.
It is off by default because most applications now support the complex symbology and the apps built off of an API version that is now retired and those apps are on retirement road maps. Now symbols like hatch fills, marker and multi stroke lines can be published and what you view in Pro will be displayed in Map Viewer, Dashboards, Instant Apps, Experience Builder, Story Maps and more with no downgraded symbology.
"Use symbol types compatible with all clients" should be the default, not the exception. How many hours have been wasted, cumulatively, by this faulty default setting and the need to remember to "check the box" each time a layer is shared? I don't think there are many users that want their symbol types to be incompatible with some clients, so why is this the default?
I am having this issue. Updated a layer in Web Map and the associated Web App has lost all symbology (see attached)
If you can share the map & app I can take a look and see if I can spot the issue.
