How to pass back once() value

Hello,

here's the scenario I can't work out:

{STRINGA} = once(${FIELDA})
within {FIELDA} if (${STRINGA}!='', ${STRINGA}, ${STRINGB})

But I can't pass STRINGA back into FIELDA without causing a loop....
