How do I create a legend for a vector field?

I have created a vector field of a netCDF using the Vector Field renderer (see: Drawing raster data using vector symbols). Now I'd like to display a legend that indicates what speeds the lengths of the arrows represent. However, inserting the layer in the legend just produces a single symbol. See attached. What can I do!?
I have tried, adding the NetCFD layer again as vector layer, but then I don't have any information about the resampling done by the Vector Field renderer.
