Spatial join. Centroids within method. Population

Greetings,

i have a Task where i have to calculate the population living within a buffer of 1 mile from librarys in New York City. The Task should be done with the centroids within method and the spatial join.

So i joined the Census_FeatureToPoint layer to the buffer layer with the spatial join and put the merge rule for total_pop on sum.

Opening the table of the new layer the totalpop for each buffer zone makes kinda sense. But if open the statistics the total sum of the total_pop is 24.013.340

Does this makes sense?
