Geotagging questions

Hey all,

I'm looking into ArcGIS for Sharepoint and have a few questions regarding Geotagging.

0. Can a document be referenced to multiple locations?

1. If so, is Geotagging by multiple locations at once possible?

* E.g. if my document is relevant to Wyoming, Nebraska, and Virginia, can I select all three states at once? Or rather, would I have to go through the tagging again for each state?

2. Is it possible to geotag into multiple layers at once?

* Tagging a document into States and Project Boundaries, for example, in the same tagging event.

3. If so, is it possible to have somethings be automatically tagged based on intersections of layers?

* E.g. if I tag something to be in my cities layer at Cheyenne, WY, it also gets tagged in my States layer as Wyoming.
* It looks like you can tag by attributes, but I'm not 100% clear on what that means from a practical standpoint.* My guess is that, in this example, you'd just tag the City and State attributes in the City layer, then when you search Wyoming, the document pops up. Is that correct?

4. Is there a table in which you can view your documents and see which features they're tagged to, by layer?

Thanks for your question.

The geotagging of documents to features on the map is saved with the map in Sharepoint. If you create a SP page with the ArcGIS Maps web part, add layers to the map and complete the geotagging process, the tagged documents and layers (features on the map) are saved with the SP page.

The next time you open the page or if any users open the page, they will be able to click on features and find the tagged documents.

For example, let's say I have a layer with US Airports, and I tag the Airport name and State (geotagging attributes) where its located. The Airport name and State will be stored as tags in Sharepoint's term store (metadata). These tags (for example, JFK Airport, New York) will be applied to all the documents tagged to the feature (JFK Airport). Once the geotagging process is completed and once the SP page is saved, the next time another user opens this same SP page will be able to click on the feature representing JFK airport and the geosearch pane will display all the documents that were tagged to this feature.

Please remember to put the SP page in edit mode when you are tagging documents and save the page.

Thanks for the response. We've installed ArcGIS for Sharepoint and have a few more questions as we get used to it.

* When we're tagging things to the layers, are they actually associated with the layers themselves, or just tagged? Meaning, is there any lasting significance to the layers or are they just a way to get reliable tags?
(depending on the answer to this first question, you can ignore the following)* Can I see what files are tagged where by clicking on the map? * I think I managed to make it work exactly once but I'm not sure how I did it nor how to replicate it.
* To clarify, when I click on a feature, I'd like to see all the files tagged to it in the popup (If they could be sorted by folder or something within the popup, that'd be cool too)

* Is it possible to set up inheritance based on attributes?* For example, I'm tagging a document to Wyoming in my States layer, using the Attribute Fields "STATE" and "COUNTRY". I'd like to be able to automatically see the document when I click the USA in my Countries layer.

Please find my responses as below,

RR: Yes

1. If so, is Geotagging by multiple locations at once possible? E.g. if my document is relevant to Wyoming, Nebraska, and Virginia, can I select all three states at once? Or rather, would I have to go through the tagging again for each state?

RR: Currently this feature is not available, but we are working on adding this feature in the near future (June or Sep 2022).

2. Is it possible to geotag into multiple layers at once?

* Tagging a document into States and Project Boundaries, for example, in the same tagging event.

RR: Yes, you can. Once you set the geotagging attributes for each layer, you can drag and drop the document (once) and if they are overlapping one another, then once tagging action will be sufficient to tag features from multiple layers.

RR: Currently we don't support this functionality (tagging based on intersecting layers). But rest assured we will add this to the feature backlog.

Tagging attributes to features is how Sharepoint is able to geosearch documents. Similar to tagging pictures, once I establish the geotagging attribute(s), Sharepoint saves the attribute values in the "Enterprise Keywords" column in the Sharepoint term store. Once the features are tagged, the next time when a user clicks on a geotagged feature, behind the scenes Sharepoint will start searching the term store (Enterprise Keywords) and find all the documents where the attribute value equals the attribute value of the "selected" (mouse click).

Is there a table in which you can view your documents and see which features they're tagged to, by layer?

RR: Yes, you can. You can create a view for each library (following the steps in the below link) and you should be able to see the "Enterprise Keywords" column which will give you a list of all attribute values tagged to a particular document.
