Does survey123 have the capabilities to capture lines and polygons? Instead of just point features associated with the survey.
Thank you for the guidance... much appreciated!
You guys rock!
Hi Nathan,
Hopefully my answer on this post answers your question here: https://community.esri.com/message/837522-re-when-will-survey123-support-polylines-and-polygons?commentID=837522#comment…
Phil.
I have tested the Beta version.... It is great...
Is there the option within the polygon function to add just a point?
when is the polygon function going to be available in the regular S123 version....???
I would love to use this next field season....
Nice work ESRI folks!!
Thank you very much for the work, I look so much forward to test it.
I saw that in my email first thing this morning, so excited to test! Thanks Survey123 team, another major milestone is about to be reached.
Polyline and polygon support is now available in beta. Please go to the EAC site to start testing!: Welcome to our Feedback Community
Do you have a estimated date of when that will happen ?
Hi Josh,
Polygons and lines are not currently supported with Survey123, however, they will be supported in the future.
Were polygons and lines ever supported? I do not currently have access to my iPad and I need to figure out if Survey123 will work for our field staff.
Thanks!
Sure, Collector has the High Accuracy GPS metadata capture, but so does Survey123, but the data entry is cumbersome at times and I like to have my data per-processed before I take a look at it within the GIS.
However, if you apply this read and if you set up your data schema the correct way while building a few tools, then you can have all of the lines and polygon data gathering Survey123 forms you want.... https://community.esri.com/groups/survey123/blog/2017/05/31/blog-high-accuracy-gps-data-collection-oh-my
We use an external GPS unit; non-Trimble, that allows us to grab data down to 6 inches and then we also have RTK capabilities if needed all within Survey123.
Don't get me wrong, Collector has a place for us in our lineup of tools that we utilize, but sometimes; well most of the time, it pays to think outside of the box!
Cheers!
We also have R1 units that can be synced with a mobile device that allows for sub meter accuracy.
You are right Mike. That's why Collector would seem to be the obvious choice. It may not have the same form capabilities that Survey123 does, but you can still collect all the data you need with it all the while using an external receiver such as an R10 to get accurate data. I dont see the need to reinvent the wheel with Survey123 and add line and polygon data collection.

Actually it would depend on how the Survey123 Team enables the ability to collect the lines and polygons. If they allow you to Average each vertex, then the accuracy could be very good.
It also depends on whether you are using a blue tooth or external GPS GNSS receiver to collect the locations of the vertex within the lines and polygons (like you do within Collector). If you are using something like EOS Arrow 100 or 200 GPS units in tandem with their EOS PRO Tools app, then you could gain a lot of accuracy depending on the environment you are working within and which unit you are using.
Just out of curiosity, why would you want to collect line or polygon data using a phone or tablet? The data would be horribly imprecise. Have you looked at possibly using collector?
Hi James, thank you for answering.
Okay, then I misunderstood your answer to Jimmie.
Is polygons and lines (or even better: gps tracks) in any way in the pipeline for a near-future version, say in 2017?
I am about to choose which service to use for surveys (survey123, trailmarksys, and others). None are perfect considering feature types, identification, platforms, ease of use etc. - so I need to know future developments to choose which way to go.
Hi Karl,
You are correct- line and polygon support was not planned for the 2.0 release.
Hi James,
In my organization we will conduct surveys on land use in a UNESCO heritage area, and we need to include lines and polygons in the survey. I understood this possibility should be included in 2.0 and I have seen very much forward to this.
Apparently this request hasn't been fulfilled yet. I only see the GeoPoint field type.
Is it correct?
Hi Jimmie,
Currently Survey123 cannot collect the shapes of lines and polygons. With the coming 2.0 version, it will be possible to update the attributes of these features.
