Enhance SLD (OGC Styled-Layer-Descripter) support by making AGS SLD aware and allow users to edit in that standard on the AGS, without needed an ArcMap document. Secondly, make ArcMap docs (MXD) SLD conforming or exportable. This will allow ESRI products to get a hook into the OGC environment that is quickly scaling to the capabilities of ESRI products.

I posted the second part of this request as parr of my ArcGIS 10 betatesting:
ESRI respons: That will be a nice feature to have, but currently it's not planned for ArcGIS 10. Without client side SLD support in ArcMap the use of WFS will be minimal: to slooooow!
I can't imagine why it would be hard to implement in ArcMap.

It remove the necessity for ArcMap entirely. I think its a competition thing in there mind. Same reason services on ArcGIS Server do not support WMS,WFS,WCS natively but their implementation of REST and SOAP.

one option is to use GeoCAT bridge which creates SLD files from ArcMap directly. Works a treat.

I want to export layer symbology (lyr) as SLD file so I can consume 'predefined look' in other GIS desktop applications.

I meant that this is a matter of interoperability between ArcGIS and other non-Esri GIS applications.

Where does ESRI stand regarding this idea ? It's been 13 years since the creation of this post and .sld style format would still be very useful.

In our case, we are migrating from QGis to ArcGIS Pro, and doing so we need to visualize large sets of data with a lot of different categories within one symbology. The inability to import .sld created from Qgis is holding back the full migration as we don't always have the time to reproduce the entire symbology for each and every dataset we need...

I would definitely like to see this feature from interoperability standpoint, but seeing this idea is already many years old I'm a bit skeptical if they every will get to it.

Getting the official set of styling rules for a layer is really important. SLD has been a standard for styling for several years and public institutions in Europe are using SLD to distribute those styles, both as files directly from there platforms and as a service through WMS get style function. It would be huge if ArcGIS Pro goes forward this way and makes it easy for users to get the official styles distributed by the authorities
