Thanks for sharing this. Those signs seem awfully complicated! It seems that it would be worlds easier to just spell map as opposed to sign for it.
Though, there seems to be a little bit of discrepancy between different sites on how they sign for different words.
Geography - ASL sign for GEOGRAPHY | HandSpeak
Map (which looks way easier) - ASL sign for MAP | HandSpeak
Area - ASL sign for AREA | HandSpeak
Yes, like I said it is like a dialect and it came from different geographic areas. For example, if someone is from Texas and that person visit California. I am sure they will find new sign and it is always new to them. Usually they have several different signs for the same word.
Now, for example, the word Japan and here in America, we use the "J" at the eye with like a swing J...but to them the deaf Japanese felt it is an insult to them so it is because we deaf Americans use that sign years ago... So a few years ago they adopted a new sign look like this: ASL sign for JAPAN | HandSpeak
So, in the old days we use that sign Sign for KOREA | ASL Sign Language Video Dictionary and still it is an insult to them... so we adopt a new sign that looks like this: Sign for KOREA | ASL Sign Language Video Dictionary
