Exporting data in XML file format

Hi. Is it posible to export shapefiles or rasters in XML file format from ArcGIS?

You can easily import the data into a geodatabase. Here are the steps:

1. Right-click on a folder in the catalog window > New > File Geodatabase

2. Right-click on the File Geodatabase > Import > Feature Class (single) or Raster Dataset

No, the data must reside in a geodatabase in order to export to an XML file.

And is there any way of achieving the XML export as a way around? Perhaps putting the data in some way in a geodatabase, or similar (anyway, I don't know what a geodatabase is)?
