What is the maximum length of a string field in ArcGIS Online?

What is the maximum length of a string field in ArcGIS Online? It is defaulted to 254, but I have been able to extend it to 600 so far but not as far as 1000. What is the most I can squeeze in?

See this image where there are 8000. Think its an error as it causing many problems.
