The option ???disconnect??? is grayed out,

The geodatabase administration dialog box is accessed by the administrator to disconnect all the users but sounds that the ???disconnect??? option is not active

Its because you have selected all the connected for disconnecting, which includes your connection to the sde geodatabase too. Just select the connection you want to disconnect and you will be able to do so.
