Update annotations stored in map document automatically

Is there a way to update annotations stored in map document automatically? I have an mxd which has quite a lot of annotations (labels converted to annotations) stored in map document. The labels use VBA expressions (basically concatenating different fields with indentation). I assumed these annotations would update themselves when the fields used in the expression are updated, but that's not the case. Is there a way to update them automatically? 

I am using ArcGIS 10.3

No, there is not a way to update the annotation. Once you convert to annotation, the link to the data is broken, and alterations to the table used initially to create the labels, are not passed on to the annotation. Unfortunately, you will need to delete the annotation layer (or remove the association to the layer and turn it off) and recreate it with your updated table. If you anticipate modifying your table again, do not convert to annotation, as you will have this issue once again.
