Getting started with ArcGIS API for JavaScript

I would like to create a JavaScript app to return a list of blood testing facilities in an area specified by a zip code entered in a search box. I am completely new to ArcGIS and have completed some tutorials GitHub - dhodges351/ArcGIS-Samples: Learning ArcGIS from Tutorials. I'm not sure how to combine search by zip code with find nearby facilities in specified zip code. Does this involve the concept of layering? Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.
