Mask Graticule labels at edge of map frame?

Question

I'm attempting to get masked labels at the edge of the frame.

In this screenshot, the smaller labels are "interior Labels" and the larger are just "Labels" that I have a negative offset on so they are inside the frame. What I want to do is mask the "Labels" the way the "interior labels" are masked, or even just move the interior labels to the edge. Is there any way to do either of those things?

I have a map series with many many maps so doing this manually is not an option.

You can use a background which gives you something like this, but it's clunky too. A transparent background or halo can help as well.

Another option is to convert the grid to features, which turns the labels into Annotation that you can further edit. It also turns the grid lines into features so you could edit those instead. This is more time consuming, but will give you full control.

You can change the symbol for the labeks to include a halo and mask the line that way. The regular label component is designed to display outside the map's edge, so it' doesn't have automatic masking like the interior features do. But you can use the same techniques you'd use for labels like halos or callouts to hide things underneath.
