If you're using Esri's standard 21‑day ArcGIS Online trial page, the behaviour you're seeing is expected because that trial normally requires a business/government email address, so a Gmail account will be rejected.
Since you're participating in MMGEIS, I suspect the free trial is provided through a separate programme process rather than the public trial sign-up page. I'd recommend checking whether you've received a registration approval email or any ArcGIS access instructions from MMGEIS directly . Also, check your spam/junk folder.
If you haven't received anything, I'd contact the MMGEIS team directly and ask how participants are expected to activate their ArcGIS access using the email address they registered with.
