20 centuries of map history question

Hi All:

Scratching my head here.

I would like a serious geography based reply as to why after more that 20 centuries of mapping history, ESRI does not think that having a scale in a map (ALGOL and ArcGIS Pro) is relevant to geography. I know everybody has opinions, but that is not what I would like to know.
