do set up the map extent such that it only shows the map layers that closest to the a polygon of the data frame.
you can set the map extent various locatoins .. one is a project template so it always opens with the extent you want (say perhaps you work for the city and you want to always open with hte extent to your city). Or you can set it in the Map Properties .. and a few other ways too 🙂
