How can I see TOTAL length of a line being edited?

Please don't suggest using "dynamic constraints", it only shows length of current segment being created not the total length of the line being created.

The workaround for me was

* make the line too long

* use the edit option to "change line length"

Hey presto, done. But I would prefer to know the length in advance.
