How to view grid/ruler in map window?

Question

I want to display rulers or guidlines in my map pane to help create a grid with equally sized boxes.

I know this can be done in a layout, but that doesn't suit my case.

Anyone know how?

This possible solution doesn't add rulers or guidelines but you can use the Reference Grid in Map View to create equal size boxes. You can set it's properties for x,y size and rotation too!
