Requiring a Photo in Field Maps

Can you require capturing a photo in Field Maps, as you can in Survey123? If not, is this a planned future capability?

I’d really like to use Field Maps for a portion of my workflow but I need to require a photo be taken. I'll have to use Survey123 until this capability is added.

@Tom_LaueThere are plans to support in-line attachments. However, we have not committed to making these require-able.

Can you describe your use-case for requiring a specific photo?

Do you need to require just one photo, or multiple photos?

Do you work offline?

Are you collecting new features or editing existing features?

What are your expectations if a photo already exists for a feature?

Hi @Anonymous User – thanks for the quick reply!

This is for a street cut restoration workflow which has field crews visit a site on two different occasions…

I am using Survey123 for field crews to complete their initial street restoration form including taking a picture of the initial restoration.

Another crew will go out later to complete the final restoration and click the existing point (preferably in Field Maps) and fill in the final restoration width, restoration length, restoration notes (optional) and take a final picture.

So all points will ultimately have 2 photos (initial and final photo).

Trying to edit existing records with Survey123 is not easy but doable. I’d rather the second field crew work exclusively in Field Maps since they can see the points they need to visit in the map. I can hide all the fields except the ones they need to fill out and make those required for them, but I can’t require them to take a picture which we need for our records.

I don’t expect any offline editing.

I am also interested in this capability. Our use case would be for electric meter change-outs. We currently use paper for out readings and in readings (almost always zero these days). But having a picture of the reading would be good verification and would save time in the field.

We might also require a picture for our joint use communications attachment requests. We currently rely on the inspectors work flow to take pictures of any violations, but they are only human and sometimes get distracted. We also perform pre-attach inspection and then post-attach inspections and their attachments sometimes fail to meet our standards or code violations. It would be a nice feature for the inspectors to get reminded if they forget for whatever reason.

For us it is also a requirement for proof of maintenance and restorations of assets.

I guess it would be good to be able to setup two photo "fields". Where you could attach 1 or more photos for the "initial photos" field and then be able to capture 1 or more photos "final photos" field.

Or something along those lines.

Yes! This is very important to any workflow. For ours, it would be inspecting trees or having contractors show their completed work to reduce the need for site inspections.

I'll add here as well that having an option of setting photo capture as required in Field Maps would be ideal for our organization. Our use case is when a water meter is changed out or has maintenance conducted on it. We have a related work history table that serves as a running log and having those historical photos is necessary.

For a workflow we would greatly appreciate this functionality as well, we are currently working on locating all water valves within our municipality and require photos for every future collected.

I agree with this request.

The scenario I have is being able to link particular attachments to particular questions like you do in Survey123.

Eg.

Question 1: Intersection Approach Photo

Question 2: Intersection Signage Photo

Question 3: Intersection Safety Barrier Photo

This assignment of photo(s) to a question/attribute then allows the photos to be loaded into report generators and dashboards in their correct filtered position like you can do using S123 managed form attachments

Agreed, this would be a fantastic feature. We have several workflows that require photo documentation/proof for regulatory compliance.

Hi,

I am interested in this too. We have contractors out removing tree stumps. We have to have the size of the removed stump proven to us by a photo with scale for the payment since each size category has a different price. Obviously these are existing features and we need multiple manadatory photos.

According to a dev response in Early Adopters, it is a maybe in later 2024.

"Unfortunately some underlying capabilities the Maps SDKs need to provide for us aren't yet in place. There has been some progress here, but full support will require the new 200.x SDKs which won't be in Field Maps until early 2024."

Would love to see this capability added as well! We require photos for most inspections we do. We use Survey123 for some and Field Maps for the more map centric inspections. Would be very useful.

Would also love to see this happen! Looking into filling in gaps in commercial suite addressing and having a photo of the suite is incredibly helpful to gauge the size of the suite, confirm the spelling of the business, and QC that the suite number was put in correctly by the inspector during the site visit.

Could you point me in the right direction to get more info on this feature/functionality?

The sdk is out if you want to build a Field Maps like app yourself. The current version of field maps is still running 100 I believe. Based on the state the Field Maps Preview app, they are rebuilding much of Field Maps from the ground up using 200.x. I would not expect to see that in production until the end of 24 or beginning of 25

We need this too for many different Field Maps projects. We want to require photos. Anyone from Esri able to weigh in is this in Product Plan and if so when roughly? Just needs a Boolean added to the code for Required yes/no. And ability to have questions with custom hints for each line for each photo, for example to instruct users how to name the photo. Example: Hydrant_Photo_From_Street_DateXYZ and "Hydrant_Photo_Closeup_Date" each with its own Picture(s) line with its own hint for file naming. And make them Required.

@KerriRasmussen Greetings again. 😎 I am looking forward to the bigger 'Related' records button with more intuitive icon you mentioned. For now, I just name the related table "CLICK HERE to add inspections". Kind of hacky but works. Looks weird in some other places like WAB apps but it serves its purpose.

Keep up the great work field app teams! I am appreciating the power of arcade and Field Maps Designer. Also looking forward to being able to manually edit Calculated fields without a "switching" field soon, as you showed me the workaround for.

Greatly Needed Indeed!! We have a Hazardous Vegetation Program and pictures are a must to illustrate the issues found in the field. Is there an 'idea' for this? I would like to have this functionality by next year's program in the spring.
