Allow a splash screen option similar to what exists in Web AppBuilder.
This is a great idea. We are currently building more StoryMaps and would like to add a whole StoryMap splash disclaimer.
@GISTeam8 @Anonymous User -- Thanks for posting this idea. Can you provide more information as to why a splash screen is needed for a story and what type of information/formatting would be required (plain text vs. rich text, images, video, etc)? Is there a reason the disclaimer/notes need to be presented as a splash screen rather than added to the beginning of the story?
A splash screen hits you right in the face and isn't something public users might pass over if it was just text in a StoryMap.
I think the WAB splash screen is perfectly fine so whatever the format is there would be suitable.
Yep, I also agree! We use a work-around to the splash screen for our current story maps but it isn't ideal. We require our developers/authors to use splash screens on public applications (WAB apps) that feature our legal disclaimers and terms of use to the public. Its not uncommon for government agencies to have legal language to share with their users and a splash screen is a great way to do that.
Hi @Koeller_Christine_A_-_DOT - could you share what your workaround is to add a splash screen for Story Maps? Thanks!
I also agree that this would be extremely helpful. I am embedding storymaps into websites, which often creates usability issues ( having double scroll bars to scroll through the website and then also the through the storymap). If I was able to have a splashscreen then that would prompt the users to understand the double scroll bar situation and fix the usubility issue.
I also would really like something like this. Our organization has a Story Map that has insights pages embedded into to it. I've had requests from users for me to add a widget where I could include a short list of instructions for interacting with the embedded objects. I'd also like to be able to put the data disclaimer there. Like the other poster, we are required to include a disclaimer on our products that must be available for reference within the page. It's wordy and although it is necessary, it doesn't really fit well in the Story Map itself.
A splash screen and or news banner option would be fantastic!
I'd like to add a splash screen in order to promote an upcoming webinar we are doing on the same topic. My storymap is within an iframe at another URL. I'll try to add the splash screen to the HTML wrapper, but it would be easier to do within the storymap.
is this in the works? Just came across a reason why we need a splashscreen for a storymap as well!
I'm also trying to add a splash page to a storymap. Curious if this is an option yet.
The work-around used when I originally commented in 2021 was to add an About tab at the beginning of the story that included our legal disclaimer language. Here is an example: Seasonal Weight Restrictions (arcgis.com)
It's probably not a great workaround anymore since these story maps are retiring.
I believe the lack of a splash screen in Story Maps is still relevant with the new template though. Here's an example of what WisDOT did with the new story map template (disclaimer at the top - again, not ideal): Scenic Byways of Wisconsin (arcgis.com)
I no longer work in the same position at WisDOT so I'm not responsible for ensuring our public apps meet agency standards.
There's an exciting new way to embed stories in your own web pages. This method of embedding works via a <script> tag (as opposed to a simple <iframe>) and provides advanced customization capabilities, including the ability to do things like add a splash screen and much more.
For more information, see What's new in ArcGIS StoryMaps (February 2025).
I also would like this - except I would additionally request that the splash screen already has built in navigation tool tips and it would be available for collections as well. For some reason folks don't intuitively understand the four squares are the home button. Right now creators are creating story maps to help provide that info and that's just silly.
