What doesn't my Excel data appear in ArcMap?

This is a great list of Best Practices When Using Excel Files with ArcGIS.

In my experience, the problem is almost always to do with field names. Remove all characters, except alphanumeric and underscore. Field names must start with a letter. Keep field names short.
