Does enabling ArcGIS extensions slow down performance

Does enabling ArcGIS extensions slow down performance. In other words. Should I enable Desktop extensions and just leave them enabled or should I just enable the ones I need for a particular map. It is easier to just turn them on and forget about them but I am concerned about reduction in performance.
