sun shadow volume accuracy?

Does anyone have any input on the accuracy of the Sun Shadow Volume tool?   I want to use the tool to create a fairly accurate visualization of shadows cast from objects on an agricultural field, over the course of a day (which I plan to animate in Arcscene).  I need the shadows to represent what would really be seen on the ground - which is relatively level, in this instance.  I am using ArcMap 10.2.2 (with 3D Analyst).  Anyone?

There are no references cited, but the inputs would suggest that the factors that can be given with respect to location and time are all there.  See the code sample and tool input parameters for the factors considered.

Accuracy, however, would require ground truthing.
