Model Builder error when creating a join and field calculate from a feature service

Have a feature Service that we use to join to another table then calculate a field in the feature service.  Because the layer name in the feature service shows as 0 which is the ID it throws an error.  If we use an SDE feature class instead of the Feature service the model works.  We need to use the feature service for the model to run on the web as a geoprocessing service.  Can we change the layer ID to something other than an integer or is there another option?
