are people seeing data usage spike when the gps is running?

One of my field guys said their mifi data plan usage which caps at 1GB is maxing out after a few days in the field running collector on an IPad. Aside from running in disconnected mode I'm not sure what to tell them. Is anyone else seeing excess dataplan usage from collector? Are there things we can do to configure collector to use less?
