I have a project that I am working on that is looking at alumni from my school. I have the number of alumni per zip code but I would like to analyze it also by county. How can I do this?

No, they are not. I have the counties and zip codes as two different shapefiles.
are the zips fully contained within the county? If so you could summarize the zip data and join the resultant to the county file. You might have to use a spatial join if you don't have a common attribute field.
