GeoEvent Datastore setup question- Type? Portal?

I would like to install a datastore on a GeoEvent Server(10.5.1) to relieve some load from our SQL SDE database. This datastore will be on the same virtual machine as the GeoEvent install.

My questions are:

What type of datastore is recommended to handle feature services and real time AVL event data from our Networkfleet AVL source? Relational or Spatiotemporal?
Second, Do I need an installation of Portal on the same machine in order to install a datastore?
