I see that the Label class has a known limitation of not supporting 2d lables but is there a work around? Is this going to be supported in the future? If you want people to use the new api in the future I would think this is a fairly common complaint. For various reasons we can't really use the 3.2 api.

You can use text symbols as a workaround, but I agree this is a pretty significant shortcoming.
