Hi,
Today we got heavy problems with drawing - caching.
We have an file geodatabase, one polygon layer in it. It´s color is purple. We make an query and get an new polygon layer.
Because we created this layer, we can change the colour of this layer. So i change it to orange.
BUT! The new colour is shown only in some map scales. When I zoom in or out - the color changes. Sometimes i get polygons which are half orange, half purple - see attachment. You will see the same polygon in several map scales.
Deleting the cache doesn´t help. Nor does the auto-refresh in source data options of the layer.

And there are better things - we took a newer version of the geodatabase and made the query again - it happens, that not only the colors are wrong, but also the shapes themselves - they are shown from the old database, even if it was deleted and replaced by a newer one.

Any solutions?

If the layer name in the table of contents is really long it will cause display issues. The name will be the query in your case, so it is possible that this could be the problem. Once the drawing error occurs, it will continue to occur in the current Explorer session. To work around this, rename the layer to a shorter name (less than 100 characters should work). Save the layer or save the map, Exit / shutdown explorer and add the layer with shorter layer name or open the map with shorter layer name and the polygon symbol should display correctly.

Yes you can workaround the problem by using the .msi to install, see this thread.

I previously had the beta version of ArcGIS Explorer desktop installed and I uninstalled so that I could get the latest version (2500). I have .net 3.5.1 installed and my computer meets all the requirements for installation. When I attempt to install it, I get this message:[ATTACH=CONFIG]32325[/ATTACH]

Customer service/tech support won't assist since I don't have a customer number. Any suggestions?

Update.

Looks like this was in fact a firewall issue. Our IT Division researched it a little and had my Login "white listed" on our network and it seems to have solved the problem.

We are using ArcGIS Explorer 2500, and identified that when you add layers to a map (using direct connection or by using ArcSDE service) opens a connection for each of the layers added.

Our environment:
Database Server
RDMS: Oracle 11G R2
Geodatabase: 10.1 SP1
SO: Linux Red Hat Enterprise Server 5.7

There is one pain point, and that is the local cache files. Things won't work out well when 1700 and 2500 cache files are mixed in the same folder. 1700 won't like the cache files from 2500.

The cache location can be changed in the registry for 1700 or 2500 in current user. Once this is done running 1700 and 2500 on the same machine will work. In this picture you can see that I am running both side by side. Remember that you can copy 2500 on the computer and run it without installing it.

We are planning to upgrade our organization from AGX 1700 to AGX 2500.
Scoping out the path we see a few problem areas.

We have in the neighborhood of 3000 users.
So we plan to support the coexistence of 1700 and 2500 for at least a quarter.

It should not be a problem for users that only log into one workstation but there are a large number of users that leverage multiple shared workstations. These workstations will not be able to be updated the same time and since we have Roaming Profiles I believe it could compound the problems as 1700 and 2500 will be accessing and updating the same files (not at the same time of course but they will nevertheless be using the same files)

These files reside in the users [Profile]\AppData\Roaming\ESRI\ArcGIS Explorer folder (which gets copied local when the user logs in) and the Documents folder which in our case usually resides on a server in a path like

\\[Server]\Users\[Specific User]\Home\ArcGIS Explorer where Home is the users Documents folder.

We had multiple problems when migrating from 900 to 1700 where outdated files were located mostly in the Documents folder.
At that time we asked the ESRI AGX Development Team if it would be possible to have a configurable location for the files AGX saves to the Documents\ArcGIS Explorer.

Questions:

1) Is this folder configurable thru the Configuration File (ncfg) in AGX 2500?
2) If not, are 1700 files compatible with 2500 files - basemaps, mymaps, etc?

3) Are files located in the [Profile]\AppData\Roaming\ESRI\ArcGIS Explorer folder compatible between 1700 and 2500?

4) We will be upgrading our Server from ArcGIS Server 10 to ArcGIS Server 10.1 - Will this be a problem with a coexisting 1700 and 2500 scenario as described?

5) Can the location where AGX 2500 saves files in the User Profile be configured for AGX 2500? Seems like this could solve most of our problems if we can just tell AGX 2500 to use a different location for both of these folders.

Yes, we do listen to users and customers. In a future version of ArcGIS Explorer (post 2012) their likely will be changes to the available symbols and the user experience for working with them. We have thousands of enhancement requests and software ideas in our database; often the requested enhancement is the most important issue for the person that submitted it. We are well aware that when we do not address an issue, the person that submitted it will be disappointed, and we do not take this lightly. Our users' needs are important to us too! We have the challenge of prioritizing all of these requests against one another and defining a project to address the requests in a reasonable time frame. We also have to look at the ArcGIS Explorer Desktop product and weigh whether the requested functionality is a good fit. This is particularly true of functionality that exists in other Esri software products. ArcGIS Explorer Desktop is not a copy of ArcMap or ArcGlobe. ArcGIS Explorer is meant to be complimentary software for visualizing content created by ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap, ArcGlobe, ArcScene) and ArcGIS Server. It's primary role is to allow those who do not have ArcGIS Desktop to work with and view the content created by those who do have ArcGIS Desktop. ArcGIS Explorer Desktops availability and price point (free download) lowers the bar for accessing / viewing ArcGIS content.

ArcGIS Explorer does have capabilities for viewing "raw data"... shapefiles, geodatabase, rasters, text files, but admittedly there is not a strong cartographic toolset for defining how this data should be displayed (ex. symbolize by attribute). At this time ArcGIS Explorer map authoring is focused on assembling content that has already been cartographically rendered (ArcGIS layers, Services, Web Maps). As ArcGIS Explorer evolves the functionality and user experience in this area could change.

Your enhancement requests are important to us and will be considered as we continue to enhance existing software and create new software products.
We do have requests for specific symbols and symbolsets in our user requests database.

Hi Mark,

My client is one of the biggest customer of ESRI. Recently we are planning to use ArcGIS explorer for large offline user base and one the main obstacle is symbology. No doubt that ArcGIS explorer is not a replacement for ArcMAp but still for general users who just refer the map with small annotation its very rich what they need in day to day work. But because of the symbology and really small small things like turn on/off label, not easy to zoom in /out(by window), its richness is not realised by users. Symbology is too complicated and does not give professional map look.

Something ESRI should consider. I am hoing that if you open a poll these sort of things will get higest number of vote and then may be easier for your team to prioritise.

When I click on the Layer Tab and try to add data ( Delorme Basemap, World labels, etc...) it opens Excel.

The Route tool in AGX 2500 has a bug.

When you add three or more stops to a route the first and second stops are labeled correctly in the directions, but the third and subsequent stops are labeled with the second stop label.

This makes the directions inacurate and confusing.

It would be interesting to know if anyone else has this same issue.

Anybody having issues with the ArcGIS Online Connection hanging up when you open the Explorer? It works fine when I'm in ArcMap. Here's the Windows error message I get:

Just an update from my post on 2/28.

Could not figure out why the bing basemaps were not working well. So I've since completely uninstalled 2500 and went back to 1750 and the issue is gone. Bing maps base maps now load and perform normally. Not sure what the issue was but I'm ok with using 1750. I would have liked to use the portability (launch and run from usb drive) of 2500 but did not want to have a basemap issue in a presentation, etc.

Would be nice to know if this is a known issue or maybe it is just my situation.

For the installs:
I completely uninstalled AGX and all expansion packs, erased all content in %temp%\E3, then restarted, then ran ccleaner to clean file system and registry, Restarted pc again, Then installed the AGX version of choice.

I figure this is a pretty clean way of doing it. Anyone have any comments on this?

I've just installed 2500 - looks good! Given the previous discussions I was surprised to see that Bing maps basemaps are still available and work. I have never obtained a key from Microsoft as far as I know. What's the deal?

Anyone else been noticing erratic behavior with only the Bing Basemaps in AGX 2500? All other basemaps work fine. The Bing Basemaps seem to work fine when I first open AGX but if it sits for a while, then I try to scroll around the streaming is really bad, and sometimes takes minutes to complete in one spot. very strange. Then when I change to a basemap other than Bing and they all work fine even after sitting for a while. 1750 did not have this issue and I did check another staff computer running 1750 on the same network with no issues. This tells me it's probably not a Bing/internet side issue and is probably on my side. I've cleard the E3 cash several times to see if it was a hiccup but has not remedied the problem.

Anyone else having this issue? Or have a fix?

I have norwegian operative system, Windows 7 professional. But I do use "." instead of ",". I have experienced for many years that this save me from trouble with arcGIS in general.

The crash with managing locators is reproducible on Windows 8 computers. The locators can be added and used (activate from the find doc window). To remove a locator, using windows explorer navigate to your %AppData%\Local\ESRI\ArcGIS Explorer\Locators folder and remove the file.

Our Oracle-based SDE servers use user-schema geodatabases but apparently that connection type is still unsupported.

We will be reviewing ArcSDE connections for the next release.

I sounds like you are encountering two issues.

1. The locator you are using crashes when added.

2. Searching for a Place using ArcGIS online finds the place, but does not correctly zoom to it.

For 1, does the crash occur if you add the following locator.

For 2, Does this occur with all places you find? (ex. Search for "Redlands' and it zooms to 0,0)

I have downloaded the US-postal locator. It does not work within arcGIS explorer desktop. I will try to summarize my huge problems with the find tool in build 2500:

I have created a local locator fil. I can add it under ArcGIS explorer options "Manage Locators". Then I can choose it from the dropdown menu in the find tool dialog box. I then write a search string, the locator quickly find the place, then zooms to position 0°0.0000' 15°0.0000'. If I highlight the search result, right click and choose "add to map", then double click, then the map zooms back to the correct place
If I try the us postal locator, I have to write a zip-code to get it work. I write "92373" and am again sent to 0°0.000' 15°0.0000'.
I try to use my locator file published through ArcGIS server: I have added this file through "Application configuration manager". The address to the locator is "http://kart.fmno.no/arcgis/services/stedsnavn/Stedsnavn_Svalbard/GeocodeServer"

I have tested both the locators in arcgis desktop (version 10.1). They work fine there.

I have also tried to find coordinates. This did not work optimal in build 1750, but it worked with some finesse. Now it does not work at all: In build 1750 I could find coordinats in either lat/long or UTM. The trick in build 1750 was to have the same set up format for the map as for the coordinate format you wanted to find. I.e: To find desimal minutes, set the coordinates format to desimal minutes. To find UTM, set the coordinates format to UTM.
In build 2500 it does not find coordinates at all - it only says "No results found. The place you typed can not be found."

My last problem:
When use the "Manage locators" under ArcGIS explorer options, ArcGIS explorer crashes immidiately if i try to choose one of the exixting locators. This meens that I can not remove a locator after I have added it (i.e. for test purposes with the US postal locator).

Finally: If I remove my "custom locator" added with ArcGIS explorer application configuration, then the standard arcGIS online locator comes back. This work!

Our Oracle-based SDE servers use user-schema geodatabases but apparently that connection type is still unsupported.

After installing the 2500 Data Access Expansion Pack I was unable to connect to the user-schemas although I was connecting to Master (sde.DEFAULT). So the following will work - sde:oracle11g:oranet but not this - sde:oracle11g:oranet:fred

Are there any plans to update the Data Access Expansion Pack to support Oracle User Schema? I feel this is a crtical omission.

Much less important but annoying nevertheless is the connection dialog requires all connection boxes (Server, Service, Database) to be filled in before allowing the connection request to send even though only Service is required by Oracle.

Yes, a 64 bit version is planned, it currently lags a bit behind the 32 bit version, as we get the code working in 64 bit. Yes, Add-ins from 1750 will work In ArcGIS Explorer 2012. For the 64 bit version you will need to confirm that the add-ins were targetted at "Any CPU"

The ArcGIS Explorer Desktop build 2500 System Requirements say that it can be installed on 64bit but does not say that it is a 32bit version that will be installed - or at least I did not see that stated anywhere.

Consequently, I was surprised to see "ArcGIS Explorer Desktop (32 bit)" installed on my Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop when I installed Build 2500 last night.

Perhaps a note could be added to that help page and to the ArcGIS Explorer Desktop Installation Guide clarifying what to expect when installing ArcGIS Explorer Desktop Build 2500 on 64bit Windows at present.

Mark, Mike, Bernie - ArcGIS Explorer 2500 Team,

We were very excited about the release of 2500 and downloaded, installed, and tested it out right away.

It looks good, performs well, and seems solid.

When we loaded up our custom configuration with 26 Extensions and Addin Libraries totaling over 50 Doc Windows and Buttons we were very disappointed to see everything that we took so much time to lay out on custom tabs and groups using small and large icons as appropriate - dumped into the AddIns Tab filling it up from left to right as far as the eye can see.

Our choices are limited and none of them are good. We can:

1) Turn off the option for our users to load AddIns locally that are important to them but not for everyone in our user community.
2) Create "custom" configurations of our Custom application for specific people including their required AddIns creating a Configuration Management nightmare.
3) Turn on the AddIns Tab and tell our users they have to page thru 50 buttons to find their own AddIns.
4) Keep our config clean - without the AddIns tab and tell our users if they want to use our Applcation and their own AddIns they need to run two instances of AGX. One launching our Application configuration and one launching AGX sans config.

Are there any other options you can recommend?

I cannot build our EAZ any longer since installing 2500? The SDK page says the API (SDK) hasn't changed since 1500, but are there any other SDK related updates that need to be applied to be able to properly build an AGX Add-In project? The exact error message I put in its own thread, link below:
