Check MXD version in vb.net

I want to know MXD version using ArcObjects (using 10.1 SP1). I know that this is an open issue (IMapDocument.GetVersionInfo Method return Unknown) and that there is a workaround in Python, but I've to use ArcObjects vb.net.

Please, any help?

It looks like the Interface IMapDocument is broken as someone here was unable to use it, they also give a link to escalate the bug (but only if you are U.S. customer).

For what's its worth I did find this python solution.  Now I have never done this so don't know what the pitfalls are but it appears you can call python from within VB .Net have a look at this.
