Advanced print solution

Please find in the codegallery my first version of an advanced print solution:

The backend is developed in Java as a ServerObjectExtension: PChPrintSOE

The communication to the SOE is realized by the REST.
So, any client can be used Flex, Javascript, ...
I just created a simple FlexWidget.

Some features:
- full print over the rest api (usable by any client)
- export to pdf,jpeg,png,emf and mxd!
- view paper layout extent live on map
- make print on a "template" mapservice by keeping the predefined layout
- multi-mapservices/multi-server support
- add graphics on the map view positioned in map units
- add elements on the layout view positioned in paper units like scalebar, scaletext

The code is under full development:
- support for wms layer
- code clean up and reorganization

Any suggestions, remarques or help is welcome.

I'm back to getting the null object reference error but I can investigate it now that I've got your source code working. Hopefully it will be another simple oversight on my part.

just find at the bitbucket page the need locale file:

Under "locale", you find the missed file for your project.
Just copy it into your locale folder of the FlexViewer.

Hi all,

I've read through the forums but I couldn't find the answers to my issues.

First I tried the Build version and I got the error: "Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference".

So I immediately went for the source code implementation. Now I'm getting this error:
"Unable to resolve resource bundle "PchPrintWidget" for locale "en_US".

Based on google searches I tried adding this file to my build path:
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.6\sdks\4.6.0\frameworks\locale\en_US\framework_rb.swc"
Didn't help.

Any push in the right direction would be a welcome.

could you check the generated mxd file in the same folder as the pdf file (arcgisoutput)?
Does it contain the missing layer?

If the layer is included and displayed, just open it as "ArcGISSoc" user on your server. This could be a proxy or internet connection problem.

It the layer is missed, just post (or mail tom@schuller.lu) the debug messages of the printurl or the verbose arcgis server log.

Hi Tom! Great widget!
If the Aerial basemap is selected, it doesn't show in the PDF. All other basemap layers are included in the PDF when they are selected - Streets, Topo, etc.

If you are on AGS 10.0, you have to use the PchPrintSOE extension.
The PCHPrintSOEv101 is reserved for ArcGIS 10.1
I'm currently working on a merge of the 2 SOEs into 1 single SOE for both server versions.

Hi Tom... I've posted my try at bitbucket. in order to solve my issue (error 500) I've substituted the jar and followed the steps above, but the PCHPrintSOEv101 at rest reply with a "invalid url".

PS.: My arcgis version is 10.0

I'm having a strange issue. Hope someone, or Tom, can give me a hand.
The Widget was working great, so suddenly an error is appearing.

An error occurs during print: 500 / faultCode:Server.Error.Request faultString:'Erro de solicitação HTTP' faultDetail:'Erro: [IOErrorEvent type="ioError" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2 text="Error #2032"]. URL: http://myhost/ArcGIS/rest/services/layout2/MapServer/exts/PCHPrintSOE/printLayout'

The server's verbose log and my Debug informations are atttached, but I'm thinking that the key is at this line in verbose log: <Msg time='2012-10-01T17:56:24' type='ERROR' code='8001' target='layout2.MapServer' machine='LAB-ARCGIS-10' user='?' process='10108' thread='15380' elapsed='0.00000'>addPChPrintSOEMapServiceLayer.*.jsonResp IS NOT A VALID JSON-Format !!!</Msg>

I was having trouble with using the Print SOE with the FlexViewer when accessed by multiple users simultaneously.
Tom worked with me directly to implement the JAR file as a Geoprocessing services instead of the Print SOE capability on the MAp service. The GP task solved my problem with simultaneous tool access. Tom's instructions are below.

Deploy to ArcGIS
After creating a custom geoprocessing function tool and its associated custom function factory, you must deploy the custom tool class and its function factory to ArcGIS. The Java .class files of the function tool and the function factory are bundled in a Java Archive (JAR) file and deployed to ArcGIS by placing the JAR file in the <ArcGIS Install Dir>/java/lib/ext folder.
An ArcGIS application (ArcGIS Engine, ArcMap, ArcCatalog, or ArcGIS Server) recognizes the JAR file as a custom geoprocessing function tool when the application is started. If the ArcGIS application is already running, you'll need to restart it after the JAR file is deployed. In the case of testing, if you modify the code in the Java classes that are bundled in the JAR file, the JAR file must be recreated and redeployed. You also need to restart the ArcGIS application after redeployment.
Once the custom geoprocessing function tool and function factory Java classes are created and deployed to ArcGIS, they can be accessed from ArcToolbox (in ArcMap or ArcCatalog) in the same manner as other ArcGIS geoprocessing tools.
In an ArcGIS Engine application, the deployed custom tool must be consumed by creating a toolbox. The toolbox that contains the custom geoprocessing tool must be published to the server and can be consumed in server applications in the same manner as other ArcGIS geoprocessing tools.

It installs fine and I can see it has upgraded the SOE as I have the added capbability option (10.1) however when I go to use the widget in a Flex 3 application it opens up as expected however there is no Red Extent indicator as there was previously - also if you hit print nothing happens.

I have reverted back to the previous SOE and widget, which works for V2.5 applications, but not 3.0 applications. Would you be able to help me trouble shoot? I have tested this on both my Dev and Test boxes with the same result.

I have attatched my verbose logs and the debug message from the widget. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

This is not provided nor supported by Esri.

the generated pdf is stored in the "arcgisoutput" folder of the arcgis server.
In the FlexViewer demo, the pdf is downloaded when it's not blocked by a popup-blocker.

I have created a custom Layout, configured it using the ExportWebMap, and made it a service on my ArcGIS server 10.1. Problem is, I am trying to find a way to make the Title of my map change (dynamic) by allowing the user to put their own title.

I have posted this before and have not got ANY response by ESRI...

Sorry for the delay in responding about my Simultaneous map creation error with the Advanced Map widget.
My Verbose Log files when the error occurs is in the attached ZIP file.
There is also a copy with "Clean" in the title, where all references to Map Services that weren't involved in this error were removed.
Let me know if some other information can help diagnose my problem.

Hi Tom

We have been having great success with your print widget internally - so big thank you. I have now been asked to configure it to run on our external server. This is a secure server that uses long life tokens for the services and windows authentication for the application.

I have got the widget up and running however it does not show any of the layers in the print. The layout elements are all there and the mxd and JPG are generated in the arcgisoutput directory, so I believe that is all configured correctly.

HOwever, unlike my internal server, the mxd that is produced in the arcgisoutput folder does not have any map services in it.

When I look at the debug file I can see it is requesting the map services using the token so I am not quite sure what else to trouble shoot. Using Fiddler I am not able to see any errors.

Could you have a look at my verbose log file and debug file to see where I could try and trouble shoot.

I have configured the Advanced Print widget successfully.
However, it errors when the widget is run by multiple users from separate computers simultaneously.

It returns the following error on the application where it is first enacted.
2-Error during print !
No 'outputFile' in result

The error below is returned in the applications enacted while the first is running.

This behavior only happens when multiple users run the widget simultaneously.
It happens on two separate ArcGIS servers. One is at Service Pack 1 (10.01).
The other ArcGIS Server is at Service Pack 2 (10.02). All services use MSDs.

The Widget is great. Enough so, that a similar widget comes standard in Esri's version 3.0 of the FlexViewer.
Unfortunately, my organization is not ready to upgrade to version 3.0
I really appreciate sharing it with the community.

I've followed the quick installation steps and the widget is working properly for MXD mapservice. But it is not okay for MSD. The supported extensions PCExportSOE and PCHPrintSOE are not available for this kind of mapservice.

When I try to print a MSD mapservice, the PrintTask* files are generated, the legend symbology appears in the PrintTask*.MXD file but doesn't appear in PrintTask*.PDF. The same occurs to JPG, PNG, etc. Moreover, I get the following error in the logs.

Tom, i was able to get the widget to show, but it seems that it cant find the layout map services (url). when i added the SOE's, the lu.schuller.arcgis.gp.printtool functiofactory failed.when i try to print a map this messages comes up

to get thr right url of the pdf, you have to confiugre your virtual output directory of the "layout" mapservice to "https://insight.teamworksintl.net" as the other mapservices.

Could you post or mail (tom@schuller.lu) the verbose arcgis server log to see why your mapservices aren't added to the print?

Most times, it's related that the url is not resolved correctly on the server.
Could you try this url in InternetExploer on your ArcGIS Server as "arcsoc" user:

Hi Tom,

I did some reconfiguration in the PCprintWidget.xml and can now get the widget to appear when clicked, and can go through the whole print dialog. There are however still some issues. first, it is posting the pdf to my web server with its proper name (insight.teamworksintl.net), but on the get procedure it is not using the correct name, its using the server machine name (TWIWEB01). This results in an "Server not Found" error. I have attached a screen shot showing this. If I change the server name in the url to insight.teamworksintl.net (the post server name), it will return the pdf.

Second, only the base map appears on the pdf. None of my services/layers appear. In the arcgisoutput folder there is the pdf and an mxd. When I open up the mxd only the basemaps appear, just like in the pdf.

I attached my Fiddler results for the Post url and the Get url. I also posted the Widget debug file. Thanks again for all your help on this, I think we are close.

I have posted my server log, and the url again from Fiddler when the Advance Print Widget was able to be called the one time. Again thanks for working with me on this.
