Advanced print solution

Please find in the codegallery my first version of an advanced print solution:

The backend is developed in Java as a ServerObjectExtension: PChPrintSOE

The communication to the SOE is realized by the REST.
So, any client can be used Flex, Javascript, ...
I just created a simple FlexWidget.

Some features:
- full print over the rest api (usable by any client)
- export to pdf,jpeg,png,emf and mxd!
- view paper layout extent live on map
- make print on a "template" mapservice by keeping the predefined layout
- multi-mapservices/multi-server support
- add graphics on the map view positioned in map units
- add elements on the layout view positioned in paper units like scalebar, scaletext

The code is under full development:
- support for wms layer
- code clean up and reorganization

Any suggestions, remarques or help is welcome.

a .NET ArcGIS Server
and on a Java ArcGIS Server

New version with new functionalities:

Hi everybody

I'm sure that it is a silly question but when i try to run the command

soemanager.bat -a [server name] [domain name] [username] [password] PCHarcgisSOE.jar"

I receive that error message

"java' is not recognized as an internal or external command"

What am i missing???

Hy,
it seems that tje "java" is not in your path.

You can check if java is in your path by executing "java -version" in the command promp.

If it's failing, add the "C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Server10.0\java\jre\bin" directory to your path environment variable by executing:

set PATH="C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Server10.0\java\jre\bin";%PATH%

Now, recheck the java path by executing "java -version"

If it's working now, you can run the soemanager.bat

I seem to work, but now i have another problem with my username because here we use a name like this "caussin dv" and the space is a problem with the number of parameters.

Can i change that?

Try to pass your parameters with quotes, like:

 soemanager.bat -a localhost localhost "caussin dv"  myPassWord PCHarcgisSOE.jar

Tom,
I am attempting to change the default choices in your print widget - namely, the default location of the scale bar, scale, etc. I have loaded the files into my Flash project and also added the mxml to the modules list. After the project is rebuilt, I get a red "x" over the mxml file. I try to Run the project and it throws an error....should I ignore these errors, make the changes, and just export the project to release build? I am using Flash Builder 4....not sure why the error is there as soon as I load the source code you provide.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've run into another random issue with the widget you included with the Advanced print solution...I occasionally get the attached error. If I click the print button again it will work....

the Widget should compile correctly under FlashBuilder4 with the latest FlexViewer code.
Could you post the contents of the "Problems" tab in FlashBuilder concerning the error?

When you get the error during the print, could you check if there is a mxd and pdf/png/... file generated in the argcisoutput folder?
When you are running the FlexViewer in debug modus, the rest-url for calling the PrintSOE is outputted in the console view.
You can try to open this url directly in your browser.

Hy,
it seems that there is a problem with usernames containing a space.

As workaround I would suggest to create a new user which doesn' contains spaces, or use the ARCGISSom-User or use the administrator user.

Don't miss to add your newly created user and/or the adminisitrator to the agsadmin group.

If it still doesn't work, could you post your command line here?

Good morning Tom,
It appears there are some missing image files - arrow_here.png & bullet_go.png. I only had 1 image in the lu_assets folder...so I moved the missing image files there...that seemed to clear up the issue. There is an mxd and pdf/png in the arcgisoutput folder. I do not get the error all the time...it is sporadic.

When the print works, the correct files (png/pdf & mxd) are located in the arcgisoutput folder, but when the print errors, there are only tmp files (6 total) in that folder. It seems that when it does error out, all I have to do is clear the error popup and then click "Print" again...it has never given me the error message 2 times in a row.

I do have another question...if I want to leave layers off the Legend, can I insert my layers in the excludeLayers array? I tried putting the names of map services there, but it seems that it may actually be map layer names that need to be put here...am I correct?

Eric,
you could set the ArcGIS server log to verbose and check the error log.

For the legend, you have to use the layer names.
Just open a generated mxd and copy out the layername to the "excludeLayers" array.

Figured out the exclude layers issue. I have 1 map layer that shows up in the legend, but not in the map...it is on and displays in the main application. Have you seen this issue?

I also have a question on the scale text. How do you calculate the size of the scale font? I would like to make it smaller.

what is in the generated mxd? You should find there the source of the problem.

I will look the make the fontsize of the scaletext configurable.

When you tell me to look in the mxd for the source of the problem...which problem? The print error?
If so, when the error is kicked out - the only files generated are .tmp files.
With regards to the layer that is not showing up in the output....I looked in the mxd and the layer is there, it is turned on, but it does not display. I'm wondering if it has something to do with scale dependency...I do have it set for this feature even though the feature will not turn off until you are zoomed out beyond 8400...
One last question - it appears that I may have some issue relating to switching the paper sizes to inches..if I switch the page sizes to inches in the xml file, can you tell me where I would need to adjust the map scale calculations? I blieve it may be around lines 356-363 in the mxml.

if you have problems and the mxd isn't generated, you have to set the ArcGIS server log to verbose and check the log files.

You are saying that the mxd is correct, but the data isn't displayed. There seems to be a problem in the mxd with the layer. The PrintSOE is just generating the map (content of mxd) and is exporting it.

If the content is'nt valid in the mxd, it can't be exported.
The question is, why is the layer not displayed in the mxd.

For working with inches, you have to set the correct pageUnits of the PchPrintOutput object.
See PchPrintOutput-line138 and PchPrintWidget.mxml-line266.

Thank you Tom,
Since I have recompiled the widget, the error I had originally posted appears to have disappeared. Both the mxd and the pdf/png are generated on the server. I still have 2 problems. The parcel lines are not displaying on the output files, even though they are on in the Flex Viewer. The parcel lines are shown in the output mxd and pdf/png as being "on", but they are missing from the actual display. The parcel lines feature class is joined to a data table and is set to turn off when you zoom out beyond 8400. Not sure if this is related to the join? Seems a bit strange..
My other issue is the scale of the print. I pick a scale using the widget and the red box appears as it should - that is, it covers the proper extent for the selected scale. When the pdf is generated, however, the scale has changed dramatically. I set the print scale at 2400(1:200), but when the output is generated it reads as 1:7874.02.
Any ideas? Thank you again for your time Tom.

I updated the Flex and Java code concerning the font size in the ScaleText.
You can now configure a TextSymbol which contains a textFormat object to format your text.

Could you post the tmpurl and the mxd concerning your scale problem.

but i receive e error when the pdf is to be open in the navigator.

It is the

Server Error
500 - Internal server error.

The pdf is well generate in the arcgisoutput and readable on the server but not throw IE 😞

any idea??

when you run the Flexview in debug modus, you will got written out the "tmpurl" in the console window.

When you open this url in your browser, you should got a json url containing an url.
This url should point to your pdf in the arcgisoutput directory.

Could you try to open this url in your browser?

If this doesn't work:
- are you running on Windows/Linux?
- did you use ArcGIS-Server Java or .NET?
- could you post both url's (tmpUrl + pdfUrl from answer)?

Hi Tom,
Thank you for updating the code..I have incorporated this addition to my application. My map services are not publicly accessible...could I attach screen shots? I believe part of my issue is the print extent calculations. I do notice you do some calculations in lines 358-361 of the PchPrintWidget for print extent. You indicate this is cm's and meter's...I'm guessing I have to adjust these..also those calculations use the currentScale - which is set in line 72 as 300000....I think this may have to be changed also?

I don't need access to the url's.
I just want to analyze the url itself and compare it with the mxd you got.

In line72, the scale is just initialized.
The widget calculates the scale automatically in the layout view.

I have attached the mxd,pdf, and png. I apologize, but I'm not sure what you mean by tmpurl...The url of the pdf is:http://gis-srv3.village.gurnee.il.us/arcgisoutput/PrintTask_layout_1302718599166_layout.pdf
You will notice in the pdf that the scale is 1:4724...I set the scale to be 1:12000 (1 in = 1000 ft)...

Eric,
for the tmpUrl, start the FlexViewer in debug-mode in your FlashBuilder.

After you maked you print, take a look at the console window of your debugger.
There should be displayer an url accessing the PrintSOE.

Could you also post that one?

Thanks much Tom - I will post the url from the FlashBuilder. I have changed a couple lines (360 & 361) to account for using inches and feet - at least I believe this is where I should change this. I also change the PchPrintOutput.as file at line 19 so that the pageUnits are =1 (inches)....the red box that shows the print area now appears to reflect the proper selected scale...the output on the pdf is incorrect. If I pick 1:2400 (1 in = 200 ft), the output scale is 1:7874.
