Select Visible Layers in Extent Arcpy

I've got a bit of a challenge here that goes beyond my arcpy knowledge. What I am looking to do is search my current data frame extent and turn off those features that are not visible for all my pages in a mapbook. Unfortunately we are still running 10.0 so I don't have access to the Legend limiter functionality in later versions that would make this quite simple to solve. Anyone have any suggestions as to how I should approach this?
