ArcReader 10 - Measure tool REALLY slow

Question

Has anyone noticed the measure tool in ArcReader being slow?  I mean to the point of not even wanting to use it because it just takes so long.  I click a point and get an hour glass for several seconds.  We've been trying to get others in our department to use it for measuring distance, but the wait is so long between adding points they don't want to use it.

Is there a way to fix this in ArcReader?

I tried turning the snapping off in ArcMap and it helped greatly...but it wasn't carried over to ArcReader when I re-published the map...

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

This is often remedied by compressing the geodatabase which contains the relevant data. Recently it has also had something to do with a raster image. We originally had two in the ArcReader doc. I removed one from the map and moved the other one to the place where I store the mxds used to create the ArcReader docs.

For us, this issue seems to only occur when we have many layers in the map (we have 43 in the project with the issue).  It appears that the more layers turned on, the worse it gets. We have also noticed that this only occurs in the data view. The measurement tool seems to work fine in the layout view.  The solution, if this is what's happening to other people, could be to create a Reader project that excludes the data view, unless there's a specific reason for including it.  If that's the case, then you may have to modify your end-user workflow plan to ensure measuring occurs within the layout view.  I suspect that in our case, the end-users are going to have to modify their workflows as most are not very confident in their GIS abilities; they know what they know, and to add another tool or two to achieve the same result by eliminating a view, would turn their world into chaos.
