Can I upload spatial data (UTMs or long/lat) directly into a story map, or does it have to be imported as a map from arcgis online?

Map Journal and Map Series both have the ability to create and edit maps in their builders, so you can import spatial data into them directly. Otherwise, you'll need to add the data to a map in ArcGIS Online first in order to use it in a story map.
