Split tool problem, ArcMap 10.2.1, Windows 7

Hello,

 

I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing a problem with the Split (analysis) tool? It would show an error with background tasks enabled. When I disable background tasks, it runs forever and it cannot be cancelled.

 

I attached a screenshot of the dialog box while trying to cancel out of it, but this is what it does while it's running.

I am having some problems with the split tool as well.  My problem produces the results shown.  Note that the split lines are not split by the polygon used (shown as the cyan grid).  I tried it on several machines, using 10.1, 10.2 and now 10.2.2.   I have noted several bugs surrounding the Split Tool, most seem unresolved and I suspect this is probably related.
