Upgrade multple ArcSDE instances

I have two oracle(11.2.0.2) instances on server. Each of instances have instaled ArcSDE repository in version 10.0 SP3 (software requirements).

Is it possible to upgrade one of them to newest version (10.1 or 10.2), without destroying another one?

I should say that the supported mechanism for heterogeneous ArcSDE releases
on a Windows database host is to use a remote application server host with
just one ArcGIS release on it, or to simply remove the superceeded service
and use Direct Connect.

No. In fact, I've been asked to not generate Support calls by explaining how
(even with a big UNSUPPORTED caveat). The point is somewhat moot, since
folks are encouraged to use Direct Connect, and post-10.2 won't even have
an application server.

What about the toast?

You have to use the lightest setting if you don't want to turn your bread to charcoal.

... I've never had more than 4Gb RAM on my toaster ovens, so I've never been able to get Oracle 8i, 9i, and 11g running at the same time

All the services (and their databases) are configured for Manual start (I don't like to wait
a hour to reboot), but it's possible to run them all at the same time.

I was once accused of being able to run every SDE release ever made, at the same time,
on a toaster oven, but it's not tue -- I've never had more than 4Gb RAM on my toaster
ovens, so I've never been able to get Oracle 8i, 9i, and 11g running at the same time.

10.2.0 on Oracle, and 10.2.0 on PostgreSQL on my W7 laptop...

Are you running them all at once, or do you have to change an environment variable and reboot?

Each application server must have the correct version of software in its SDEHOME
(you cannot run a 10.1 instance from a 10.0 SDEHOME, or vice-versa). The procedure
is documented for Unix and unsupported (but doable) for Windows.

Yes, assuming it's two instances, not one instance with an SDE and a user-schema
geodatabase (these must be upgraded together).

I'm currently running 9.3.1sp, 10.0sp5, 10.1sp1, and 10.2.0 on SQL-Server,
10.2.0 on Oracle, and 10.2.0 on PostgreSQL on my W7 laptop, and regularly
have 4-5 different Oracle and PG instances on my Linux hosts.

The thng is, Esri doesn't support multiple versions of application server instances
on Windows hosts. It can work, but you need to back up the SDEHOME, then
uninstall (without accepting the offer to remove the services) to clear the registry,
restore the SDEHOME, then install the new release. You'll need to learn to use
the command-line tools for service administration to delete the old service and
create the new (after the geodatabase itself has been upgraded, which will require
a Desktop install of the appropriate version). It's a lot easier if you're not running
an application server at all (just be careful to upgrade the correct instance).
