Feature count by month in Bar Chart widget

I have a feature service that contains a date field. I am wanting to have a bar cart in the dashboard that will show the count of features inspected for each month. I'm having trouble finding out how to do this in using the supplied bar chart widget. Does anyone know if this can be done without building a custom widget?
