Is a four way intersection automatically called a roundabout in route direction results? I also had a major arterial class referred to as ferry.

Straight answer on the question is no, it is not. Directions component relies on network attributes to recognize different feature types such as roundabouts, ferries, etc.
I would assume that some custom built network was used to perform the analysis, then I'd check Network Directions Setup to make sure that RoadClass network attribute evaluator returns the expected values. To do that, I'd go to Setting directions—Help | ArcGIS Desktop and checkout "Network Attribute Mappings frame" for "Road Class Attribute" and then, see what is the setup of that network.
