ArcPad Data Manager shuts down ArcMap

I am ruining ArcInfo 9.3.1 on an ELA (Enterprise License Agreement) and ArcPad 8 on its own license (not part of the ELA). When I use the data manager to export my data for use in ArcPad I get an error message during processing. The error signature states:

EventType : BEX     P1 : ArcMap.exe     P2 : 9.3.1.3000     P3 : 49c1abad
P4 : ArcPadToolsGen2.dll     P5 : 8.0.3.7     P6 : 4b625e03     P7 : 000dba47
P8 : c0000409     P9 : 00000000

ArcMap shuts down after the error and no data is processed. This event happen when i try to export as shape file or a AXF file.

Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong or what might be happening?

Any solution to this? I started a new thread describing my problem because this one was old. I am having the same problem but I am running ArcGIS 10.1 and ArcPad 10.0.4. I have tried everything suggested here. The only thing that works is moving all data to my C: drive. It doesn't work on my second local drive. But this is not an acceptable solution because we have an enterprise system here and it is a lot of extra steps and wasted space to do this.

So if anyone has an idea it would me much appreciated.

Please note that I pointed out a problem with Python in a recent post -- despite installing several versions of Python I could not get 10.0.3 to fully install. Do you have a solution to that since you are recommending the upgrade?

Just finished installing ArcGIS 10 and ArcPad 10 and am having the same problem trying to export data from ArcMap 10 to ArcPad 10. It shuts everything down.

Very frustrating. I have the same problem with ArcGIS 10 and ArcPad 10, but not with ArcGIS 9.3.1/ArcPad 10... I have found simplifying symbology and removing all but essential labelling helps, but not reliably.

Also suspect that the presence of a mixture of projected/unprojected and different datums within checked out data is no good. Also some corrupted feature geometry will screw up ArcPad too...

If you our encountering ArcMap crashing when attempting to check out data for ArcPad, I would try the following:

1. Uninstall current version of ArcPad
2. Delete ArcPad folder(s) within c:\program file\arcgis
3. Delete the My ArcPad within my documents
4. Download and install ArcPad 10.0 SP3 from Esri Customer Care Portal https://customers.esri.com/index.cfm?event=login.show
5. Launch and register ArcPad 10.0 SP3, attempt to check data out again from ArcMap

Well, it appears there are a number of causes for ArcPad Data Manager crashing ArcMap.

When this happened to me, the cause was that two of the feature classes in my mxd had a relationship to the same table. This is not allowed by the software. Luckily, it was a table that was created but never used, so I just deleted it. I don't know how to handle this if you need to keep this related table.

Hello, I'm experiencing the same problem too.
I'm using ArcMap 10.0 SP2 and ArcPad 10 is installed on my computer.

The first time I used it the Data Manager succeeded in exporting one layer, and then crashed ArcMap, like a few of you.

Now, anytime I'm trying to export again, I don't even reach the pop asking which layers I'd like to export and where. So I can't even choose a local destination to export to...

Any idea?

EDIT: After trying to figure it out, I want to export a point layer that is in a .gdb on our Direction servern and which is in projection A, and a background layer that is in a ArcSDE geodatabase on the Government geographic server. The background layer's projection is different than my point layer's.

So all of a sudden, many causes for my problem, and not that many that I can influence or change to resolve it when I read the solutions given above...

It used to work on the previous versions I had installed on this same computer: ArcMap 9.3 and ArcPad 7.1. Please make it happen 😉

I'm not sure if this will help you at all but I do see my symbology when collecting data in the field.

I have a "generic" gdb created in WGS84. I have Domains set up to contain all the "types" of points, lines, or polygons I may need to capture. I have a "generic" mxd created also in WGS84 that points to the "generic" gdb. I have all of my different "types" of point features symbolized as needed in the mxd. I check out the data to a local folder and then load the folder to an SD card on my data collection device. When collecting data, I'm able to see the symbols I've created as I capture information in the field. I'm using GIS10 with ArcPad8.

I'm having the same problem as John Zimmerman (zman1527), who posted above. I am trying to export graduated symbols created in Arcmap 10 SP1 to Arcpad 7.1. These symbols display gold data in stream sediments by colour and symbol size according to gold concentration. For whatever reason, I'm unable to do this without Arcmap 10 crashing, or losing my symbology during the export (my symbols are converted to mere points in the .apm). This is a procedure I was routinely able to do successfully with previous versions of Arcmap and Arcpad. Here's what happens when I make an attempt to export my symbology from Arcmap 10 to Arcpad 7.1:

Upon clicking the Arcpad Data Manager drop down, and highlighting "Export shapefile symobology for Arcpad", Arcmap 10 crashes. If I do not have "Export shapefile symbology for Arcpad" highlighted and proceed to export the data to Arcpad anyway, upon opening my .apm in Arcpad 7.1, the graduated symbols disappear, having been replaced with simple points.

If you've a solution to this problem, a reply would be greatly appreciated. Field season is in full swing and regaining the ability to export symbology ASAP would be extremely useful.

Transferring files is not a huge problem. Not being able to export symbology is! I have a geologic map with about 250 units in it!

Come on ESRI, fix it.

Just curious if you ever found a solution for your ArcPad Data Manager crashing problem. I'm also a geo, having the exact same problem as you were re. exporting symbology to Arcpad. I'm trying to export graduated symbology for Au data in stream seds, and "Export Shapefile Symbology For Arcpad" crashes Arcmap 10 every time.

If you've time to drop me a line with any info. on the workaround, it'd be greatly appreciated!

I was having the problem of checking out data to a network location, but I downloaded and installed ArcPad 10.0.2 and so far it seems to have resolved my issue.

Just adding to the list of things people have tried. My ArcPad Data Manager was crashing too, so I created a new mxd, only loaded one feature class from my Oracle geodatabase and just gave it the default symbology. I have no relationship classes defined. I am saving to a local directory with no spaces in the name. BOMB! I'm running ArcPad 10.0.2 and ArcGIS 10 SP2. I have an open support request and will post anything I find out.

The only solution in version 10 (srvc pk 1) I found that allows me to export my SDE data to shapefiles or AXF without crashing ArcMap is to remove all joins from the data I am exporting. Certainly not ideal because I'd like to be able to see all the joined attributes in my ArcPad project, but at least now with this work-around I am able to use the "Get Data for ArcPad" tool to efficiently get all my layers and associated symbology into ArcPad. Based on other issue listed in this thread this is just one possiblity that may be causing your ArcMap to crash when trying to export data for ArcPad.

I have been having the same problem (ArcMap crashing) using version 10, and followed the suggestion to export the data to a local drive (rather than to the network) and that did the trick. Its a bit frustrating, but at least that's a work-around. I had also tried the suggestion of creating a new personal gdb and feature class but that didn't work for me.

hmmm.....seems to be something with my data. He had me do the following:

1.Create new Personal Geodatabase in ArcCatalog 2. Create new Feature Dataset in the new Personal Geodatabase specifying a single spatial reference for all data in this project 3. Import > Feature Class (Multiple) into the new Feature Dataset 4. Create new MXD in ArcMap using the data from new Feature Classes 5. Save MXD in ArcMap 6. Use Get Data For ArcPad tool to create ArcPad checkout

This worked and so did checking out just one of my three layers, so something apparently is wrong with one or both of my other two layers.

Having same problem. Checking out data from SDE to PGDB works fine but GPS Analyst or ArcPad Manager checkout crashes ArcMap.

Has anyone found a solution for this problem? I cannot check data out of SDE to network or local drives since I upgraded to version 10. Working with shapefiles is a huge amount of work..... I have installed SP1 and all patches as of today.

I was having a similar problem until I realized that my list of exported features included two duplicates that were in my table of contents. When I removed the duplicate from the export list it work correctly. I still had to export to a local drive.

This is starting to happen to me as well. We have about 35 or so layers without any complex symbology whatsoever. It runs from a custom toolbar hooked into GPScorrect. The ArcPad Data Manager gets through about 2 of the layers to .axf and then ArcMap comes crashing down. I am processing locally without any success. It worked prior to today with no real issues (other than being slow). I uninstalled and reinstalled ArcPad and still have the same issue and there were no other changes made. This is going to be a major problem as all of out collected data will be checked in using disconnected editing for our SDE database. I hope a service pack for 10 resolves a lot of these bugs ASAP.

Whenever I attempt to export to a network location, ArcMap will crash and shut down. When I check the network location, all of the files are there (axf, shapefiles, etc), EXCEPT the APM file.

My temporary work-around is to save to a local directory, but hopefully ESRI addresses this in an upcoming patch.

I just got off the phone with ESRI Tech support and this is the same conclusion we came to.
I can checkout anything I want to my local drive and everything works perfectly, but if I try to check the same data out to a network folder ArcMap 10 will crash.

I have full permissions to the folders on the network drive I am checking them out to, but I am still getting the same problem as the quote above.

So my solution is to check them out to my local drive then copy them into my network folder and everything worked fine. I would like to Check out my data directly to the network folder, but for now its not that big of a problem.

i've had the same problem, but the workaround is to manually copy the files to the GPS unit -- using MS Active Sync.

is there any feedback from ESRI?

I too am having this issue: just about any operation with the Data Manager kills ArcMap. Even just trying to export symbology.

This is a very serious issue for ArcPad users and I hope that ESRI can get it fixed very soon.

We have the same problem.
Even writing to a different location, when exporting 23 layers from ArcMap it crashed after exporting a single layer. Had to restart ArcMap 10 and run the Get Data for ArcPad 23 times to export all the map data.
It seems to have trouble with large files with complex symbology particularly.
